Supporting a loved one
Prepare for a conversation with someone you're worried about — what to say, what you'll ask, and the boundaries you'll keep.
Reminders for the conversation
- Choose a calm, private moment when they are sober.
- Start with care: “I love you and I'm worried.”
- Describe what you've seen and how it affects you — then listen.
- Avoid labels, threats you won't keep, and arguing about details.
- It's okay if it doesn't go well. You can come back to it.
